It is a climbing vine. The leaves are usually heart-shaped or somewhat kidney-shaped, with a smooth surface. Flowers are trumpet-shaped and often have intricate patterns. The color can vary, but they are commonly a reddish-brown or purplish hue. Fruits are elongated, cylindrical fruits containing numerous small seeds.

The fresh juice of leaves and bark is used to treat diarrhea.
