It is a fast-growing, deciduous tree with a wide, umbrella-shaped canopy. It has a smooth, grayish bark and large, bipinnate compound leaves made up of many small leaflets. The tree is most famous for its large, showy, scarlet-red to orange flowers, which bloom in clusters and cover the entire canopy. The fruit is a long, flat, woody pod, containing several flat seeds.

It is commonly grown as an ornamental tree in urban landscapes.
