It is a rhizomatous herb. Rhizome is thick and fleshy, with a pale yellowish color. Leaves are large and lanceolate with a prominent midrib. They are arranged alternately along the stem. Inflorescence arising from the rhizome. The inflorescence is a cone-like structure called a "spike" or "raceme." Flowers are small and creamy yellow. Fruits are small, round, containing numerous seeds.

Rhizome is used to treat stomach ailments.
