It is a medium to large evergreen tree with smooth to slightly fissured grey to brown bark. The leaves are simple, opposite, and elliptic to obovate, with a leathery texture and glossy green surface. Small, white to pale yellow flowers occur in clusters in the leaf axils, and the fruit is a small, spherical drupe that turns red or black when mature.

Bark is used to treat wounds, cuts.
