It is a small tree that can reach up to 10 meters in height. The leaves are simple, ovate to elliptic, with a serrated margin, and can be up to 15 cm long. The tree produces fragrant flowers that are white to greenish-yellow and are arranged in terminal or axillary clusters. The bark is greyish-brown and rough. The fruit is a small, globose drupe, turning black when mature.

It is used traditionally to treat headaches, fever, and digestive disorders.
