It is a massive deciduous tree with a lifespan of several hundred years. Trunk is swollen and often hollow with stout and tortuous branches. Leaves are simple or digitately compound. Flowers are large, white and pentamerous hanging from stalks on long pedicels. Fruits are ovoid capsule.
